At least 11 people were killed and nine others injured after an overloaded car crashed into a tree in Jigawa State, according to the state police command.

The tragic accident occurred on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at about 4:30 pm in Bagewu village, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Confirming the incident, the Jigawa State Police Command said the crash involved a red Volkswagen Golf 3 saloon car with registration number LNG 983 XA (Jos).

Police spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed that the vehicle was driven by a 45-year-old man from Randawa village in Katsina State.

According to the police, the car was heavily overloaded, carrying 20 passengers, including six men, eight women, and six children, while travelling from Masaka village in Bauchi State to Dutsi village in Katsina State.

SP Adam said preliminary findings showed that the accident happened after the front tyre of the vehicle burst, causing the driver to lose control before crashing into a tree.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle after the front tyre burst, and it crashed into a tree. Eleven passengers died on the spot, while nine others, including the driver, sustained injuries,” he said.

The injured victims were immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where they are currently responding to treatment.

The police added that a full investigation has begun and used the incident to warn motorists against speeding and overloading.

“Motorists are advised to avoid dangerous driving habits and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling. Anyone found violating traffic laws will be arrested and prosecuted,” the statement warned.
