Sixteen NYSC prospective corps members travelling to the Gombe orientation camp lost their lives in a devastating road accident on Wednesday, leaving only two survivors who are fighting for their lives. The tragedy, involving graduates of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, has thrown the NYSC community and the entire nation into mourning.
The victims were part of the 2025 Batch C corps members posted to Gombe State. According to eyewitnesses who shared harrowing details online, the 18-seater bus conveying the corps members was crushed beyond recognition, making rescue efforts nearly impossible. Images and videos circulating on social media showed a scene that many described as “heartbreaking and unbearable.”

Authorities have yet to release an official statement or the full list of victims, but the wave of tributes pouring in from families, friends, and alumni communities paints a painful picture of young lives cut short just as they were preparing to begin national service.
One X user, @DukeofBourdilon, wrote: “My heart is shattered. These were brilliant young Nigerians travelling to serve their country. Sixteen dreams gone in an instant. Only two survivors are clinging to life. This level of tragedy is becoming too frequent; the government must act to stop these recurring road deaths. Our roads have turned into death traps.”
This heartbreaking accident comes just months after another group of NYSC prospective corps members died in a similar crash while heading to their orientation camp. In that earlier incident, a 14-seater bus ran under a parked truck, killing two and injuring others.

The frequency of these tragedies has sparked deeper questions about road safety, transport regulation, and the overall safety of NYSC travel routes. Many Nigerians are now calling for an urgent nationwide review of road conditions, stricter enforcement for commercial drivers, and safer travel arrangements for corps members.
As families mourn and the country reacts, the question echoes loudly: How many more promising young Nigerians must die on the road before real action is taken?
