20 Feared Dead, As Boat Capsizes In River Benue | Daily Report Nigeria
  • A handful of people have been reported to have crossed to the other side, after a boat capsized in River Benue.

A recent boat mishap has claimed no less than 20 lives on the River Benue.

The incident was reported to have happened on Saturday, December 14, around Ocholonya in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

It was gathered that the victims, who were mostly traders and children encountered an accident while returning to Odenyi in Nasarawa Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, after going to trade at the Ocholonya market.

Their boat was report to have capsized near the Ocholonya in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

 

Speaking on the accident, a resident of Ocholonya, and a community leader, who identified himself as Adanyi Adanu said

Yesterday was Ocholonya market day, the boat was carrying women and children back to Odenyi-Doma in Nasarawa State when it capsized, and everyone drowned,” .

Alao confirming the accident on Sunday, the Agatu local government chairman, Melvin James said the were traders from Apochi and Odenyi communities in Doma, Nasarawa State.

I have been informed about the mishap, and reports indicate that over 20 people might have died. Local divers claim to have recovered bodies, but I am waiting for an authoritative update to confirm the exact number,” James said

The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, could not be reached for reaction and update on the incident as her phone number was not reachable at the time of filing this report.
