The forward was on the brink of winning the trophy in February 2017, but his side was too unfortunate to have succumbed to 2-1 defeat against Cameroon at Stade de l’Amitié, Libreville in the final.

Egypt started the game well and took a 1–0 lead through Mohamed Elneny after 22 minutes but the game was upturned through Nicolas Nkoulou’s equalizer at an hour-mark before Vincent Aboubakar found the late winner for Senegal.

However, after another dissatisfactory outing on home soil in 2019, Salah’s team now emerge one of the front-runners in the imminent Afcon tournament to hold in Cameroon.

In group ‘D’, Egypt will first come in confrontation with the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday, 11th before clashing with Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.
