2023: INEC Agrees To Extend Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has agreed to extend the ongoing continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise which was earlier scheduled to end on June 30.

Rep Aisha Duku, Chairman, House Committee on INEC, said this while addressing the House on the outcome of its meeting with INEC during plenary on Wednesday in Abuja.

“The Committee held a meeting with INEC yesterday (Tuesday) and they agreed to extend the CVR, all our resolutions were approved,” she told members of the House at plenary on Wednesday.

According to Duku, INEC has also agreed for registration days to include weekends, with additional hands to ensure a smooth exercise.

The House of Representatives had on June 15 directed the committee to meet with the electoral umpire following a motion by Benjamin Kalu for the exercise to be continuous voter registration to be extended.

The House had urged INEC to extend the voter registration by 60 days.

The House also called on the Commission to deploy additional staff and voter registration machines across the country to meet the objective.

The Chairman, House Committee on media and publicity, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, through a motion, had noted that the ongoing CVR by INEC was scheduled to end on June 30 ahead of the 2023 general elections.
