The stranded applicants have however, stated that the decision of the commission to stop the CVR is a way of disenfranchising them from the 2023 election.
Recall that the Commission began nationwide voter registration in June 2021 to enable Nigerians who had just attained the voting age and others to register.
INEC had announced its plan to terminate the exercise on June 30, 2022, but a civil society group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on June 5 filed a suit at the Federal High Court seeking an extension of the exercise beyond that date.
Consequently, Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon on June 20 granted an order of interim injunction stopping INEC from stopping the registration exercise.
In compliance with the order, the electoral body extended the exercise till July 31.
In another development, the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), His Eminence Most Rev. Daniel Okoh, has stated that Nigerians will not use political party as a deciding factor in the choice of candidate to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
He noted that Nigerians have gone beyond voting based on the political party presenting candidates. Adding that electorates in the coming election will vote for candidates using their current capacities and antecedents as criteria.
