Party vows transparent, democratic process to select standard bearer
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has disclosed that it is currently exploring two options consensus or primary election for choosing its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
This comes amid speculations that key opposition figures who recently aligned with the party including former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers State Governor Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi — are all nursing presidential ambitions under the ADC platform.
Many political analysts have warned that the ambitions of multiple high-profile figures could spark internal crisis and fracture the emerging opposition alliance, giving the ruling party an upper hand in 2027.

Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, the party’s spokesman, Mr Bolaji Abdullahi, revealed the two possible routes being considered for determining the party’s standard bearer.
According to him, “We are preoccupied with the development of our party and building structures and putting up necessary systems that will show Nigerians that we are indeed a democratic party.”
He added, “Along the line, we are going to act on who becomes the party’s flagbearer and we are going to do so in a very transparent and democratic way.”
“This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary.”
The statement reads partly:“We have two options. One of the options on the table is to engineer a consensus and if that is not achieved, we go into primaries that will be transparent and whoever emerges, the party supports.”
“What is most important now is that we continue to build confidence in Nigerians and show that we are ready to lead with a new ideology of inclusion, fairness and development.

“ADC is focused on building a formidable structure across the federation to ensure that no matter who emerges, the vehicle for national redemption is strong enough to win.
“The ADC remains open to collaboration with credible individuals and movements who believe in democratic values and the future of Nigeria.”
The statement added that the party is not under pressure to rush the process and would not allow internal ambitions to derail its broader goal of rescuing Nigeria from failed leadership.
