Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly offered ex-Anambra Governor and 2023 presidential contender Peter Obi the vice-presidential slot in a proposed one-term joint ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to multiple sources familiar with the discussions, the offer was tabled during a private meeting between the two leaders in the United Kingdom earlier this year.
Atiku is said to have committed to serving a single term and handing over to Obi in 2031, pending an agreement.

“Both leaders know that time is running out. By May 2026, most parties will have made their candidates public,” a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) insider said.
Insiders revealed that Obi has agreed in principle to the proposal but is still consulting key allies before making a public commitment.
“That was where Atiku first mooted the idea,” another source said. “Obi then asked for time to think it over and consult his loyalists.”
Due to ongoing internal crises within the PDP and Labour Party (LP), talks are intensifying around moving the alliance to a neutral political platform, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) emerging as a leading option.
“The Social Democratic Party was part of the plan,” a source said, “but the ruling APC has reportedly infiltrated it. So, they are tilting toward ADC. Some loyalists have already joined quietly.”
Paul Ibe, Atiku’s spokesperson, confirmed coalition discussions without providing specifics. “I cannot speak on the specific agreement,” he said. “But both of them are focused on building a robust coalition to unseat the clueless APC government in 2027.”
Peter Ahmeh, a close ally of Obi and Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, said unity is the key to defeating President Bola Tinubu. “We are in the LP as we speak,” he said. “But the LP must be a welcoming platform. We cannot sleep in a hostile environment and expect success.”
He added, “As for the LP, the Supreme Court has spoken, and Abure’s term has elapsed. LP will survive.”
ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu confirmed ongoing discussions. “The ADC leadership has held conversations with all major stakeholders,” he said. “We are part of the move. Within the last 10 years, 21 deregistered national parties have joined us.”

However, some PDP figures remain critical. Diran Odeyemi, a PDP National Executive Committee member, dismissed Atiku’s continued ambition. “How do you offer what you don’t have?” he asked. “Atiku is not Abraham Lincoln. His desperation has damaged the PDP.”
Meanwhile, northern elder statesman and Arewa Consultative Forum chieftain Anthony Sani said the alliance is part of democracy. “Whether the arrangement would have more traction this time is for time to tell,” he said. “This is democracy in action. It should surprise no one.”
