  • Southeast records lowest voter registration figures nationwide with only 64,696 applications.

  • Deputy Speaker warns poor turnout could limit Igbo political influence in 2027 elections.

  • Kalu calls on residents to seize INEC opportunity and register en masse.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has appealed to the people of the South East to take full advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The call followed a report by INEC showing that while the South West recorded over 61 per cent of the 1,379,342 online pre-registration applications received between August 18 and 24, 2025, the South East recorded the lowest figure with just 64,696 applications.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, the deputy speaker described the exercise as a vital opportunity for the region to strengthen its political voice and secure a stake in national decision-making.

Decrying the low turnout, Kalu cautioned that the region risks undermining its ability to influence electoral outcomes if residents fail to participate actively.

He stressed that registering to vote was not only a civic duty but also the foundation for meaningful political representation.

Encouraging residents to troop out to registration centres, he said: “If we want development, we must show we want to be part of the decision-making mechanism and that starts by preparing to vote and be voted for. Beyond party lines, let the region show our strength by the volume of registered voters from the Igbo nation.”

Kalu emphasised that participation in the electoral process remains the only way to choose the right leaders and unlock the dividends of democracy for the region.
