Ahead of the 2027 general election, the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) has openly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, while also calling for rotational presidency to be clearly written into Nigeria’s Constitution.

The endorsement was announced in a communique issued after the forum’s national summit themed “National Unity and Nation Building; Beyond 2031,” held in Abuja on Saturday.

Presenting the communique, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Babangida Nguroje, said the forum believes rotational presidency remains key to reducing political tension and strengthening trust among Nigeria’s regions.

According to the NFFL, the presidency should rotate back to the North in 2031, after the completion of the current southern tenure under President Tinubu.

“To eliminate doubts, reduce political tension, and build enduring trust between the regions, we call for rotational presidency to be enshrined in the Constitution,” the forum stated.

The group also passed a vote of absolute confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership, adopting him as its sole candidate for the 2027 election.

Speaking at the summit, the Chief of Staff to the President and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, stressed that national unity is critical to Nigeria’s stability and global relevance.

He noted that Nigeria is facing a defining moment due to global uncertainty, shifting alliances, and intense economic competition.

Gbajabiamila warned that internal division could weaken the country’s ability to handle global shocks, scare away investors, and slow long-term development.

He added that the Tinubu administration understands the strength and sensitivity of Nigeria’s diversity and remains committed to fairness, inclusion, and balanced development.

According to him, all six geopolitical zones now have development commissions to ensure federal projects are evenly distributed across the country.

He cited major infrastructure projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto–Badagry Highway as efforts aimed at promoting national integration and economic connection among regions.
