  • Peter Obi confirms 2027 presidential bid, dismisses speculation about running with Atiku Abubakar.

  • Declares loyalty to Labour Party while pushing for broader opposition coalition.

  • Says coalition seeks a “compassionate leader” to rescue Nigeria from current challenges.

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has ruled out the possibility of being a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election.

Obi stated that he would contest for the presidency on his own merit, describing reports of a possible alliance with Atiku as mere speculation.

This was contained in an interview he granted Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme aired on Sunday.

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” Obi said.

Responding to rumours of a potential Atiku-Obi ticket, he added: “This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.”

Obi, a former Anambra State governor, also reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party, stating that he remains a vibrant and committed member of the party that carried him through the 2023 election.

However, he hinted at working with a broader opposition coalition, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

“I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” he said.
