Presidential ambition faces scrutiny over primaries and party structures
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has criticised former presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing him as lacking discipline and depth in political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Showunmi made the remarks on Saturday during an interview on Hard Copy, a programme aired on Channels Television, where he questioned Obi’s approach to party politics and long-term political planning.

According to Showunmi, Obi failed to consolidate his political base over time, arguing that consistent loyalty to a single political platform would have strengthened his chances of electoral success.

He said Obi’s frequent political movements reflected what he described as “laziness in structural thinking,” insisting that politics requires long-term institutional planning rather than popularity-driven momentum.
Showunmi argued that if Obi had remained within one party framework and invested in building internal structures, he could have created a clearer path to victory.
The PDP chieftain also raised concerns about Obi’s recent political alliances, suggesting that aligning with established political heavyweights could complicate his chances of securing party tickets in future primaries.
He noted that experienced politicians, particularly those with long-standing involvement in party structures, are rarely displaced easily during primary elections.
According to Showunmi, entering a political space dominated by seasoned actors while insisting on consensus candidacy is unrealistic and unlikely to succeed.
The PDP stalwart stressed that internal party democracy, institutional loyalty and grassroots organisation remain critical to winning elections, warning that public enthusiasm alone cannot replace political structure.
Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has not responded to Showunmi’s comments as of the time of filing this report.
