The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has voiced fresh concerns over what it calls the unfolding “conundrum” involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the development is not the biggest threat to democracy but remains a serious internal issue the party cannot ignore.

He clarified that the ADC is currently not in conversations about who will carry the party’s 2027 presidential flag. Instead, the focus is on building a strong nationwide structure capable of contesting effectively across all 36 states and the FCT.
Abdullahi explained that while the Atiku-Obi question is important, the party intends to first pursue consensus when the time comes. If consensus fails, he said the ticket will be thrown open to all interested aspirants.
According to him, the narrative should not be reduced to a two-man race, as other influential politicians have also indicated interest in seeking the ADC’s presidential ticket.
In his words: “Is it a conundrum? Yes. Is it a challenge? Yes. Is it something we are concerned about? Yes. But nobody in the ADC at this time is having conversations about who the presidential candidate will be.”

He stressed that the party’s immediate priority is to “establish real presence” nationwide before thinking about candidates.
Abdullahi added that the ADC is considering several options, including forming alliances with other political parties to build a strong and competitive coalition for the 2027 race.
“We are looking at other options within other political parties to build a formidable coalition and see what is possible,” he said.
The political ambitions of Atiku and Peter Obi have raised fresh questions about the direction of the ADC coalition, but the party insists its strategy is far bigger than any two individuals.
