At the closing ceremony of the Ogun State Diabetes Youth Development Camp in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, the elder statesman spoke and gave the speech. The camp organized by Talabi Diabetes Centre has trained 21 children living with type-1 diabetes in the State to manage the condition. He advised that children should abstain from consuming sugar, foods with high carbohydrates. He also said they should always take their insulin injection to manage the disease well.

Former President said that he has been diagnosed with diabetes for more than 35 years now. Contrary to the usual deal with diabetes, he is still going about, jumping up and down, doing many things many people of his age cannot do,  adding that since he was diagnosed with diabetes, a number of his friends have died. The main reason is that they just did not manage their diabetes the way they should manage it.

So far, there is no cure for diabetes, it does not matter whether you are type one or type two. He said he hopes there will be a cure before he dies but if there is none, he prays that there will be a cure before any of the children gets old or die.

In his closing remark, he said you have to understand the type of food you should eat. In addition, you must completely abstain from sugar. The number of carbohydrates that you take must be watched. Don’t miss your drug which is an insulin injection for a diabetic person. However, he  said he takes his drugs along with him everywhere he goes and always checks his blood sugar level regularly.

In conclusion, he said;

“Don’t let anybody put fear in your mind, diabetes has no cure for now but it can be managed.”
