Edo State Governor’s wife, Betsy Obsakei has called for more investment in sports, saying it can be a tool to tackle illegal migration, human trafficking, and other social vices caused by poverty.
Mrs. Betsy Obaseki made the statement at the weekend unveiling of the logo for Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) 2021. The tournament’s objective is to harness the sporting talents especially among teenage girls in the state.
It aims at youth empowerment and to tackle the scourge of irregular migration among teenage girls who are trafficked.
At the unveiling ceremony in Government House, Benin City, the First Lady said the event is to assure the young girls in the state and to make them know that all they need is in them to attain their desired potential and the state is ready to support them.
“Today, indeed, is a great day of joy for me and I want to congratulate every Edo young woman and every Edo mother because the mothers will be happy to find that there is a better environment for their children to thrive.”, said Mrs. Obaseki.
She added that before the first four years of Governor Godwin Obaseki-led’s administration, Edo state was known for human trafficking and irregular immigration placing the state on the world’s record of human trafficking.
But the reverse is the case as there is a change in plot, all thanks to government interventions like the Betsy Angel’s Shelter Initiative, Edo Lady Mechanic, and the Edo skills development agency (EdoJobs), among others.
She added that the state government will continue to organize training at various skills development centers across the state and with the intervention of international agencies to help the development of the youths in the state.
