A pit latrine tragedy occurred in Yar’Gwanda, Tsanyawa LGA, Kano, where three men died while attempting to retrieve a phone from the toilet.

The victims were Danjuma, who was 60 years old and also known as Black, his son, Ibrahim, aged 35, and Aminu Gaye, also 35. Fortunately, a fourth man called Abba Alasan was rescued alive.

Kano State Fire Service spokesman, Saminu Abdullahi, released a statement revealing the details of the incident on Sunday.

Abdullahi explained that at about 11:00 am, Tsanyawa Fire Station received an emergency call from Aminu Yar’gwanda reporting that four men had been trapped inside a pit toilet.

The rescue team was dispatched to the scene at about 11:15 am, where they discovered that Danjuma had become trapped after attempting to retrieve his phone from the toilet.

His son, Ibrahim, then went in to save him but also got trapped. Gaye and Alasan followed to help, but they both got trapped as well.

Abdullahi added that the first three victims were rescued unconscious while Abba Alasan was rescued alive.

The victims were then handed over to Superintendent of Police Iro Lado at the Tsanyawa police division, who transported them to Bichi Special Hospital for medical attention, where doctors confirmed that three had passed away and only one had survived.
