3 Nigerian Men Found on Ship’s Rudder Going to Spain

The Spanish coastguard on Monday rescued three migrants stowed away on the rudder of a ship that arrived in the Canary Islands from Nigeria.

In a photograph distributed on Twitter by the coastguard the same day, the three stowaways are shown perched on the rudder of the oil and chemical tanker Alithini II.

According to Spain’s maritime rescue service, the three stowaways were found on a ship’s rudder in the Canary Islands after an 11-day ocean voyage from Nigeria.

However, the men found on the Alithini II oil tanker at the Las Palmas port on Monday afternoon appeared to have symptoms of dehydration and hypothermia.

Spain’s Maritime Safety and Rescue Society stated the men were transferred to hospitals on the island for medical attention.

Also, the Spanish government revealed the survivors were all from Nigeria, adding that one of them remained hospitalised Tuesday.

According to photo shared on Twitter by a maritime rescue agency, known in Spain as Salvamento Maritimo, the three men were seen sitting on top of the rudder under the ship’s massive hull with their feet hanging only a few centimeters (inches) from the water.

Meanwhile, the Salvamento Maritimo was said to have dealt with six similar cases in the last two years.
