The Federal Government has issued a five-day flood alert across 14 states, warning that 43 communities are at significant risk of heavy rainfall and potential flooding between 4 and 8 September 2025.

The alert, released by the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment, was signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department. Authorities emphasised that flooding remains one of Nigeria’s most persistent environmental hazards, regularly displacing thousands, destroying farmlands, and triggering outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Experts cite climate change and inadequate drainage infrastructure as key factors heightening vulnerability during the rainy season.

States listed as at-risk include Ebonyi, Cross River, Kano, Zamfara, Taraba, Abia, Yobe, Plateau, Borno, Imo, Niger, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Akwa Ibom, with affected communities ranging from Afikpo and Edor to Sokoto and Oron.

The alert follows a forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency predicting thunderstorms and flash floods in several northern and central states in late August.

In a parallel development, the Chinese government has contributed $1 million to support flood relief operations in northern Nigeria.

At the signing of the exchange notes in Abuja, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, described the donation as “timely,” assuring Nigerians that the funds would be managed transparently and reach the intended beneficiaries efficiently.

Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai expressed solidarity with Nigeria, recalling recent devastating floods in both countries, and reaffirmed the partnership between China and Nigeria during humanitarian crises.
