A five-year-old boy has “accidentally” shot his mother to death with a handgun.

According to Casa Grande police, Michele Cox was shot in the chest at about 6.20 am while her four children, ages 4, 5, 11, and 12, and boyfriend, 40, were home.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital but died a few minutes after as the injury she sustained was severe.

While the police had initially ruled the shooting as accidental, Michelle’s brother, Michael Cox, is seeking justice for his sister.

“I would really love for the person responsible for having the gun to be prosecuted,’ Michael said

“In the event that is the truth, that her 5-year-old picked up a .45 caliber and shot it at his mother, somebody still should be prosecuted for negligence for even having a gun at all,” he added.

So far, it has not been ascertained who the weapon belonged to and no one has been charged in the case.

The Casa Grande Police has assured it will continue to investigate the incident, saying they are working with Pinal County Attorney’s office to determine if any crime occurred.

Meanwhile, Cox’s four children were placed in the care of her father. They are reportedly very upset by the situation.

“All of the kids are distraught, and they really just don’t know what’s next, so we’re doing the best to support them,’ Michael said.

She had moved her family from Chicago to Arizona about a month ago so as to spend more time with her sick father.

Her loved ones say she will be remembered as a caring person who was dedicated to her family.

“She was a very giving person – always been a giving, loving person,’ Michael explained.

‘Everyone who knows Chel, that’s all they ever say about her, how nice she is and how sweet she was.”

He added: “I love my sister, I cherished her and she cherished me.”
