A new report by the Alliances for Africa (AFA) and the Committee of Gender Directors in Nigerian Universities (CGDNU) reveals that 63% of female students across 12 universities in Nigeria have reported experiencing sexual harassment.
The findings were shared during a joint briefing in Abuja on Sunday, highlighting alarming concerns about safety and harassment in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The survey, which involved 3,528 respondents from 12 universities including Federal University of Technology, Owerri, University of Port Harcourt, and University of Lagos, revealed that sexual harassment is widespread and persists in many universities.

The study showed that while universities are supposed to be places of academic and personal growth, the harassment of female students undermines this ideal, creating a hostile environment for many.
The coalition behind the report is calling for universities to implement and enforce zero-tolerance policies against sexual harassment, with severe penalties for violators.
The survey also emphasized the need for immediate action to protect students and restore confidence in the educational system.
