Nigeria’s 9mobile has officially rebranded as T2, unveiling a bold transformation plan aimed at becoming a fully digital-first telecommunications company focused on innovation and enhanced customer experience.

Speaking at the launch event in Lagos on Friday, Chief Executive Officer Obafemi Banigbe said the change goes beyond a name swap, describing it as a complete strategic shift.

“We are no longer who we were; we are becoming something greater, more ambitious, and more in tune with the future,” he said.

The event was attended by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, alongside key industry stakeholders.

T2’s strategy involves leveraging cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics to deliver personalised products and accelerate service rollouts. The company is targeting Nigeria’s growing population of startups, creatives, and remote workers who are increasingly demanding fast, flexible, and accessible digital services.

Acknowledging the company’s previous struggles, Banigbe said the experience had strengthened its resolve.

“Our challenges are reminders, not defeats,” he stated, while reaffirming the company’s renewed focus on making customer experience the core of its operations.

He expressed gratitude to regulators, shareholders, partners, and employees, dedicating the rebrand to “every Nigerian dreaming of something better,” and called on the nation to “reimagine, rebuild and relaunch.”

The rebranding comes shortly after T2 signed a three-year national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The deal allows T2 customers to access MTN’s extensive nationwide network, improving coverage and service quality, especially in underserved areas. The move reflects a broader industry shift towards collaboration among telecom operators to optimise resources in a competitive market.

T2’s journey began in 2008 as Etisalat Nigeria, a joint venture between Etisalat Group, Mubadala Development Company, and Nigerian investors. It quickly gained market share by introducing 3G and later 4G LTE services, attracting over 15 million subscribers by 2012.

However, financial distress, regulatory challenges, and mounting competition eventually took their toll. By 2017, debts of about $1.2 billion forced Etisalat Group’s exit from Nigeria. The company was subsequently restructured, rebranded as 9mobile, and later acquired by Teleology Holdings Limited in 2018.
