Nigerian Woman starves son to Death

A 42-year-old Nigerian woman, Olabisi Abubakar is facing a trial in the United Kingdom (UK) for starving her 3-year-old son, Taiwo Abubakar to death.

Olabisi was facing two counts of manslaughter and child cruelty before the Cardiff Crown Court in the UK.

She was accused of killing her son through religious fasting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was revealed that police had forced entry to her flat in the Cathays area on June 29, 2020, after a friend raised concerns for her welfare.

On arrival, the police found Olabisi Abubakar thin, malnourished, and dehydrated, lying on a sofa bed next to the body of her son.

Police searched the property after Taiwo’s body was discovered and found a note on food in a fridge, stating: “Do not touch anything, whooping cough, virus, save yourself.”

Cardiff Crown Court was told that Taiwo weighed 9.8 kilos (22 pounds). Also, a pathologist Dr. Stephen Leadbetter found out his death was caused by malnutrition and dehydration.

The police told the court she was a devout Pentecostal Christian and fasted as part of her faith.

The court heard Olabisi was sectioned on June 30, 2020 and has remained detained in hospital, where she was being treated for paranoid schizophrenia.

The court is expected to decide if Olabisi may have been insane at the presumption of the case on Thursday— this would make her not guilty of charges against her.

Olabisi Abubakar was born in Lagos, Nigeria and reportedly moved to London in 2011.
