National Population Census (NPC) Chairman, Nasir Kwarra has revealed that the forthcoming 2023 census needs more funding.

Kwarra called for the release of the NPC’s thirty-one billion capital allocation allocated in the 2023 budget for preparatory activities for the exercise.

He further urged President Bola Tinubu to approve an additional loan of over two hundred billion naira (N225.2b) for the exercise.

The amount will cover training and fieldwork allowances, retraining instructors, and conducting second-level mock counts.

The NPC Chairman also estimated the total cost of the exercise at over five billion naira (546.72b).

The development was announced by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, Dele Alake, in a statement titled ‘Population Census: President Tinubu pledges support for NPC, calls for data integrity.’

Alake explained that the NPC chairman revealed that the commission had trained sixty thousand instructors to train
enumerators and supervisors.

He said plans for last training were being finalized, but were stalled by transitional programs and funding issues with the new government.
