Morocco defied the odds in the Women’s World Cup by silencing critics and advancing to the Round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over Colombia, while Germany and South Korea crashed out of the tournament.

The Atlas Lionesses showcased their determination from the start, pressing forward with every opportunity they had.

Colombia fought back, aiming for an early goal to gain an advantage and secure their third group stage win.

  • They finished in the second position in Group H.
  • The 2022 WAFCON finalists advanced to the next stage.
  • Unfortunately, Germany was eliminated from the tournament.

Just before halftime, Morocco’s supporters were thrilled as Colombia conceded a penalty.

However, Sakina Ouzraoui capitalized on the rebound and assisted Anissa Lahmari, who found the target and scored the only goal of the match.

In the second half, Colombia had their chances, but excellent goalkeeping from Khadija Errmichi and a bit of luck secured Morocco’s place in the last 16.

Germany

The victory for Morocco marks an impressive turnaround after their opening 6-0 defeat against Germany.

As runners-up in Group H with two wins, the Atlas Lionesses advance, while Colombia tops the pool despite the loss, and Germany faces an early exit.

The match between Morocco and Colombia ended in a 1-1 draw at Brisbane Stadium.

Morocco now joins Nigeria and South Africa in the knockout phase, and they are set to face France on Tuesday at Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide. 

Germany, despite starting strong, failed to advance due to their loss against Colombia and the subsequent draw.
