N6.9b Fraud: Emefiele Weeps as Court Makes Decision

Suspended Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele on Thursday wept inside a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that the embattled was reduced to tears following an adjournment of the N6.9 billion fraud case filed against him by the Federal Government.

The court adjourned Emefiele’s arraignment due to second defendant, Sa’adatu Yaro’s (a female CBN employee) absence at its sitting on Thursday.

Emefiele was seen trying to evade camera as he wept, while his lawyers consoled him.

The Presiding Judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, granted an adjournment and rescheduled the matter for August 23, 2023.

N6.9b Fraud: Emefiele Weeps as Court Makes Decision
Godwin Emefiele, the suspended CBN Governor on Thursday wept in court during the hearing of a N6.9 billion fraudulent case filed against him

Emefiele was faced with twenty charges of procurement fraud, conspiracy, and conferring corrupt advantages on his associates, including Yaro and her company, April1616 Investment Limited.

The offence in question is in direct violation of Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

Also, a Federal High Court in Lagos has scheduled a ruling for today (Thursday) regarding the Federal Government’s application to withdraw the charge of “illegal possession of firearm” against Emefiele.

The suspended ex-CBN Governor has been in detention since his suspension on June 9, 2023.
