Ben Foster has retired from professional football just five games into Wrexham’s 2023-24 season, a decision that comes after he had briefly come out of retirement due to the persuasion of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the team’s co-owners.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper, who was an ex-England international, had previously made 12 appearances for the Wrexham team and played a crucial role in helping them secure promotion in the previous season.

Initially retiring in March, Foster had responded to an urgent call from Reynolds and McElhenney to help the Welsh team gain promotion.

This contribution earned him a 12-month contract extension, but he has now chosen to retire again due to a difficult start to the new season in League Two, during which Wrexham conceded a significant number of goals.

He felt that retiring now would be beneficial for both himself and the club, giving Wrexham time to explore their options before the transfer window closes.

Foster also mentioned his deep attachment to Wrexham and its significance to him.

Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, praised Foster’s professionalism and dedication to the club, noting the timing of his decision and its impact.

He thanked Foster for his substantial contribution, including a memorable penalty save that played a vital role in the team’s promotion.
