A group of military officers sacked Gabon’s President, Ali Bongo just four days after he was re-elected on Saturday.

A group of twelve officials made the announcement after Gabon’s electoral authorities announced early Wednesday morning that President Bongo had won a third term.

  1. Alain Bernard Bongo, commonly known as Ali Bongo, was born on February 9, 1959.

  2. His father was Omar Bongo, President of Gabon from 1967 until he died in 2009.

  3. Ali Bongo came from Brazzaville.

  4. His mother gave birth to him when she was eighteen.

  5. Under his father’s presidency he served as
    Minister of Foreign Affairs from
    1989 until 1991, from which he represented Bongoville as a Deputy in the National Assembly until 1999, and from 1999 he served as Minister of Defense until 2009.

  6. He won the 2009 presidential election in Gabon after the death of his father.

  7. He was re-elected in his 2016 election marred by fraud, arrests, abuses, protests, and post-election violence.

  8. Bongo was married to Silvia Valentin (French) and Inge Lynn Collins Bongo (American), but divorced in 1994 and 2015.

  9. He has one daughter, Malika Bongo Ondimba, and three adopted sons, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, Jalil Bongo Ondimba, and Bilal Bongo. They were adopted children with Silvia in 2002.
