Police Arrest UNILAG Students Protesting Against Fees Hike

Officials at the Nigerian Police Lagos State Command Wednesday morning, arrested students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who were protesting school fees hikes by the school authorities.

During the protest, police also opened fire on students and arrested activist
Philip Olatinwo and two other protesters.

The two others arrested were the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Public Relations Officer, Giwa Yisa Topnotch.

One X user, Bushari Shamsudeen called for Giwa’s immediate release upon the announcement.

Shamsudeen said:

Nigerian Police Force Headquarters Must Release the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Public Relations Officer, Giwa Yisa Topnotch with immediate alacrity.”

Another X user said:

Release the national pro of NANSand the deputy senate President of nans or we shut down the Lagos state police headquarters with immediate effect @jidesanwoolu @NigeriapolicePR #unilagprotest.”

NANS had notified police on Tuesday of plans to hold a peaceful protest at the University of Lagos on September 6, 2023.

The union warned the Department of State Services, DSS not to prevent students from exercising their right to protest because it was a universally recognized human right.

However, the latest information by a source revealed that police disrupted the protests, opened fire on demonstrators and arrested some students.

The source said:

Update: @activistfemi, Philip Olatinwo, and two others have been arrested by @PoliceNG after shooting at Unilag students protesting over fee hike.”
