Uzoma Asagwara, a 39-year-old Nigerian, has been sworn in as the new Health Minister and Deputy Premier of the Province of Manitoba in Canada.
Born to Nigerian parents from Eastern Nigeria, Asagwara’s appointment comes after serving in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly.
In 2019, Asagwara made history by becoming the first black person to win a seat in the assembly, breaking a 150-year jinx.
She was the first black queer legislator. She has a career spanning over a decade as a psychiatry nurse.

The new minister also obtained a Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing and also completed a joint program between the University of Winnipeg and the University of Brandon, both in Manitoba in 2008.
She was born in Winnipeg Canada in the late 1970s when her parents migrated to the country.
Asagwara played basketball until her official retirement from the sports.
As the new health minister, Asagwara will drive innovation and health advancements within the biosciences, intersecting with the bioeconomy in various ways.
