ECOWAS Court Orders Bazoum’s Immediate Release

1 Min Read

The court of the West African bloc, ECOWAS has ordered that Niger’s deposed president, Mohamed Bazoum be released immediately from detention.

The court ruling did not only call for Bazoum’s “immediate and unconditional release,” but also demanded his reinstatement as president.

According to the court, Bazoum represented the state of Niger and remained the president of the republic.

It highlighted the violation of constitutional rights in his detention.

Meanwhile, Niger is currently suspended from the Economic Community of West African States.

The ECOWAS court’s ruling carries notable weight, although some member states have previously disregarded its decisions.

Bazoum has been held in his presidential residence with his wife and son since the coup.

In mid-September, he appealed to the ECOWAS Court of Justice to secure his release and restore constitutional order in the country.
