AFCON 2023 hosts, Ivory Coast got off to a winning start after seeing off Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in the opening game of the Africa’s biggest football showpiece.

Goals from Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso ensured victory over the African wild dogs of Guinea Bissau on Saturday night at the Olympic Stadium Ebimpe in Abidjan.

The match was preceded by eccentric performance from Nigeria’s Mama Africa, Yemi Alade and Morocco’s Mohamed Ramadan, mixed with colourful display of varying cultures of the continent.

Fofana, who stars for Al-Nassr FC in the Saudi Arabia Pro League, scored the first goal of AFCON 2023 just the four minute into the opening game.

He was denied a brace after hitting the woodwork in the 35th minute.

Krasso then doubled the lead for Elephants 13 minutes into the second half, sending the stadium into a frenzy and joyous mood.

Ivory Coast leads the Group A table with three points pending the outcome of the second game in the group between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
