The anti-LGBTQ bill, also known as the bill on human sexual rights and family values, has made gay practices illegal in Ghana. The bill was passed by the parliament on Wednesday, February 28, 2204. It was proposed by Sam Nartey George, the MP for Ningo-Prampram.
The bill bans LGBTQ activities and forbids any promotion, advocacy, or funding of them.
According to local media, people who engage in the activity could be jailed for six months to three years, while those who support or promote the activity could face three to five years in prison.
The bill has been in the parliament for years and has faced opposition and attempts to amend it or stop it.
Homosexuality is already illegal in Ghana and can lead to a prison sentence of up to three years.

The new law will increase the maximum sentence to five years.
The law will also outlaw the sharing of materials that support LGBTQ rights.
The bill was a reaction to the opening of the first LGBTQ+ centre in Accra, the capital of Ghana, in January 2021.
The centre was closed by the police after public protests and pressure from religious groups and traditional leaders in the mostly Christian country.
The Christian Council of Ghana and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council said in a statement together that being LGBTQ+ was “not part of the Ghanaian culture and family values and, therefore, the people of this nation cannot accept it”.
