Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Intercepted 21 trucks that were loaded with a mix of food and other non-food items intended for diversion out of the country.

The trucks, bound for N’djamena (Chad Republic), the Central African Republic, and Cameroon, were intercepted by the diligent operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Command of the EFCC.

Given the prevailing food shortages in the country, the interception occurred during a well-executed sting operation along major exit routes, specifically the Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama roads in Borno State.

The investigation revealed that the food items had been cleverly concealed within the trucks.

Luckily, the vigilance of the EFCC operatives prevented the covert operation from going unnoticed.

The EFCC reiterated that the waybills accompanying the goods clearly indicated their intended destinations.

It said:

“The arrest of the trucks is expected to stem the tide of food insecurity occasioned by unscrupulous antics of smugglers across the country.

“Suspects arrested with the trucks are being profiled and would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”
