Mike Dean, a former Premier League referee, has weighed in on the controversial incident involving Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku during their 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

In the dying moments of the match at Anfield, Doku was involved in a potential penalty situation when he appeared to make contact with Alexis Mac Allister’s chest. Referee Michael Oliver decided not to award a penalty, and VAR upheld the on-field decision.

Reflecting on the incident, Mike Dean acknowledged that Doku was “very fortunate” not to concede a late penalty. Initially, Dean himself thought it could have been a penalty upon first viewing.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville also shared his perspective on Sky Sports, describing Doku as a “lucky boy” after reviewing replays of the incident.

He said: “I can’t think he’s touched the ball, Doku, and the follow through – he’s caught him right in the chest.

“For me, it could be a penalty.

“It’s a massive decision by the VAR, he’s got a tiny touch on the ball with the follow through full on the ribcage.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Stuart [Attwell] sends Michael Oliver to the screen.”
