Originally an FG project, the airport remodeling was taken over by the state government due to completion delays, following consultations with relevant authorities.
The project aims to provide an alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, given its proximity to the nation’s capital.
Previously, the airport bore the name of the late Abubakar Imam, as part of a series of 15 airports named after prominent Nigerian personalities.
