Varsity Unions Declare Strike Over Pending Salaries

1 Min Read

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have declared a 7-day warning strike due to the federal government’s delay in paying their salaries.

The decision to initiate the warning strike was part of the resolution made by the joint action committee of the SSANU, and NASU after their meeting in Akure over the weekend.

Mohammed Ibrahim, the President of SSANU, disclosed the development while reading the Communiqué of the meeting to journalists in Abuja on Monday.

According to Ibrahim, the demand for payment of the four months’ withheld salaries of their members, following the 2022 nationwide strike, has not been met.

He added that the decision to proceed with the warning strike was taken as a last resort, as previous protest letters and other communications with the federal government did not yield results in terms of salary payment.

The development follows the nationwide protests by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) concerning the current economic hardship, which has led to soaring costs of living across the country.
