The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf has begged President Bola Tinubu to reopen the country’s land borders for food importation.

The previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari shut down all land borders to prevent smuggling and encourage local consumption.

However, more than a year later, Yusuf believed that reopening the borders would help reduce inflation and lower food prices, as Nigerians are currently experiencing harsh economic conditions.

The Governor made the plea during a meeting with the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi.

He said:

“I also made a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to as a matter of urgency consider the reopening of the county’s borders for importation of foodstuff to alleviate the suffering.”

The Governor further lauded the Customs Service’s initiative to distribute food items to the people of Kano and pledged continued support to the service to enable it to discharge its mandate effectively.
