The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, called upon the Federal Government to provide funding for the establishment of free cancer treatment centers across the country.

The motion, titled “The Need for Free Cancer Treatment in Nigeria,” was introduced by Mr Yusuf Badau, the representative for Shanono/Bagwai Federal Constituency in Kano State.

Badau stressed the urgency of addressing the devastating impact of cancer disease and the increasing number of affected individuals in Nigeria.

He highlighted that the lack of government intervention in cancer treatment has led to an alarming number of deaths. Many affected persons struggle to meet the financial obligations of treatment due to limited resources.

The House recognized that a large proportion of the affected individuals are low-income earners, particularly in rural communities.

It stated that compared to other developed nations, there is insufficient awareness and funding for cancer prevention and management in Nigeria.

To address the critical issue, the House has urged the government to establish a legal framework ensuring free cancer treatment in all teaching hospitals.

Furthermore, the House Committee on Health Services has directed teaching hospitals across the country to promptly establish cancer treatment centers and provide free treatment to cancer patients.

The Federal Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office of the Federation have also been tasked with allocating funds to support the establishment of essential cancer treatment centers and facilitate free treatment for affected individuals in Nigeria.
