Delta Assembly Demands Urgent Action Over Slain Soldiers in Okuama

The Delta State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the killing of 16 soldiers at Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.

The condemnation followed a motion raised by Festus Utuama, member representative of Ughelli South State Constituency during Tuesday’s plenary.

Utuama called for a vehement condemnation of the unprovoked killing of the 16 soldiers and one civilian, who were on a peace mission to the community.

The lawmaker also urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently direct relevant security agencies to investigate, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the act.

Utuama went on to call on the Governor to set up a commission of enquiry to investigate and uncover the immediate and underlying causes of the crisis between Okuama community in Ughelli South and Okoloba community in Bomadi local government area.

In their contributions, other lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader, and members representing different constituencies, appealed to the Nigerian Military to exercise restraint and not engage in reprisal attacks.

They advised against punishing the entire community but rather advocated for identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Additionally, they urged Governor Oborevwori to implement more measures to protect lives, especially those of the elderly, children, and vulnerable individuals in the area. They also called on the military to handle the situation cautiously to prevent further loss of lives and property.

The motion was unanimously adopted through a voice vote as House Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor directed for the resolution to be sent to the governor for immediate action.

He also called for a minute of silence in honor of the slain soldiers.
