DELTA LG POLLS: Itsekiri Candidacy in Warri South West a Threat to Peace - Stakeholders
SHARE

Stakeholders have warned against plots to impose an Itsekiri candidate in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.

This is as the stakeholders cutting across Ijaw speaking areas of the Council raised an alarm over an underground plan to breach the “gentleman agreement” of peace in the council.

Addressing newsmen during a press briefing in Ogbe-Ijoh, headquarters of the Council, the stakeholders led by Nathaniel Oromoni, urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to call on Itsekiris to respect the peace pact with regards to rotation of power between both ethnic groups in Warri South West.

Oromoni, sociopolitical and public affairs analyst cum politician, who described the plot as a ‘desperate act’, said the move if not averted, could lead to ‘unrest’ in the area.

He said;

“We call on Governor Oborevwori to by all means not to allow any attempt to impose another Itsekiri candidate in Warri South West in the forthcoming election.

“Governor Oborevwori must caution desperate politicians within his government from the Council to shy away from such a desperate act.

“The plot is against the Warri Peace Accord that considered power rotation between Ijaws and Itsekiris, and we should continue to uphold that stand.

“Itsekiris must not allow themselves to be used by desperate politicians within the ijaw/Itsekiri political class to cause political unrest in our dear Council”, Oromoni said.

The chieftain of the All Progressives Congress explained that an Itsekiri son, Hon. Taiye Duke Tuoyor just recently completed two terms as Chairman of the Council.

Oromoni argued that until an Ijaw indigene completes two consecutive tenures as Chairman, Itsekiris should talk themselves out of contesting the seat.

“The said itsekiri aspirants are not in anyway a threat to the ijaw aspirants but their aspiration is against the rotational arrangement that as kept us peaceful,” he added.

The stakeholders subsequently called on the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) to ensure a level playing ground as well as a conducive environment for all political parties to “have a say, and for a free, fare and credible elections in Warri South West.”
