Serie A secures five slots in next season’s Champions League following an impressive performance across European competitions this season.

UEFA’s European Performance Spots initiative awards two additional slots to leagues based on their clubs’ performances. This decision is part of the broader revamp to expand the Champions League to a 36-team format.

Italy secured its place in the top two leagues after three of its clubs reached the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the Premier League suffered setbacks with four of its five remaining clubs eliminated at the quarter-final stage.

Despite no Italian team making it to the Champions League quarter-finals, AS Roma and Atalanta’s progression to the Europa League semi-finals, along with Fiorentina’s advancement to the Europa Conference League last four, boosted Italy’s coefficient score, securing their spot in the top two.

Germany is poised to claim the second Performance Spot, with Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, and Borussia Dortmund advancing in European competitions at the expense of English clubs.

As a result, the fifth-place team in Serie A, currently held by Roma with Atalanta in sixth, will qualify for the Champions League. If either of these clubs wins the Europa League but finishes outside the top four, Serie A could potentially have six representatives in the Champions League. Similar circumstances apply to Borussia Dortmund, who currently occupy fifth place in the Bundesliga.
