Tunde Onakoya Appointed Sports Ambassador in Ogun

The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun appointed Tunde Onakoya, a National Chess Master, as the Sports Ambassador of the State on Thursday.

Onakoya was recognized for his record-breaking chess marathon campaign at Times Square in New York.

Abiodun praised Onakoya for his hard work, resilience, and determination that led to his achievement on the global stage.

He likened Onakoya’s journey to that of millions of Nigerian youths who strive to make something out of their lives, emphasizing that life does not care about one’s background or social status.

To honor Onakoya, the governor announced the start of the state chess competition, which will take place in all parts of the state.

Abiodun lauded Onakoya’s dedication to success without resorting to shady activities.

He stressed that Onakoya has now joined the ranks of illustrious sons and daughters who have made Ogun State proud in their chosen fields.

Onakoya, on the other hand, thanked Nigerians for their support in his quest for stardom, adding that he is proud to be a Nigerian.

According to him, despite his challenges growing up, he saw chess as a way out of poverty and an opportunity to think critically beyond the surface.

Onakoya acknowledged that chess is not popular in Nigeria due to the lack of understanding of the game’s value.

He revealed that he is working hard to popularize the game in Lagos, Kenya, and other parts of Africa as his team is also collaborating with Lufthansa Airlines to bring the game to the grassroots.

Onakoya was determined to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) of playing chess beyond 56 hours, and he did it in 60 hours.

He thanked Governor Abiodun for the appointment and promised to work with the government to make chess attractive to the youth.
