Stranded Nigerians were being evacuated since in batches before now

Nigeria’s Federal Government has declared it has suspended any further attempts to evacuate citizens stranded abroad.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister Geoffrey Onyeama, stated that the move is meant to allow the government to set up a new policy towards the evacuation of stranded Nigerians overseas.

According to the Minister, evacuees would no longer need to be put under forced monitored 14-day quarantine if they test negative for the virus from the evacuating countries.

The new policy is set to take effect from next week, according to the Minister.

He stated that further evacuation processes have been put on hold to allow the new policy to take effect.

The new policy will see Nigerians set for evacuation to be tested a least, nine days before the take-off of their flight scheduled. Those who test positive for the virus will not be evacuated according to Onyeama.

He further added that giving the Federal Government enough latitude to evacuate more Nigerians is the reason behind the new policy.

To date, 989 stranded Nigerians have been successfully evacuated 989 with 253 from the United Kingdom, 160 from the United States, 265 from the United Arab Emirates, 292 from Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon bringing in another 57.
