Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State has declared that the decisions made by the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly are null and void, as they are no longer recognized as legitimate lawmakers following their defection.

Fubara made the declaration while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers and opinion leaders from Bayelsa State, led by former Governor Seriake Dickson, at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.

He explained that he had accepted a presidential peace accord to allow the defecting lawmakers to remain in their positions, despite having no constitutional basis, as a political solution to a problem.

However, he stated that the peace accord did not mean they had the authority to make binding decisions for the state.

The Governor revealed that he had made sacrifices to maintain peace in the state, despite ongoing harassment and intimidation of his supporters.

He revealed his commitment to building on the foundation laid by past leaders and promoting development in an atmosphere of peace, rather than crisis.

Fubara also acknowledged the support and solidarity shown by the Bayelsa leaders, stating that his administration will continue to foster a cordial relationship between the two states, which has yielded positive results.

He said:

There is no complete Rivers State without Bayelsa, and there’s no complete Bayelsa without Rivers State.”

The Governor assured that he would continue to work towards leaving a lasting legacy that will make the people proud, and that his administration will prioritise the well-being and development of Rivers State.
