Grammy-nominated artist Seun Kuti has shared a personal story about his late father, Fela Kuti, the legendary Afrobeat pioneer, and how his father’s generosity left him with no inheritance.

Seun explained that when he was a child, his daily allowance was more than what his teachers earned. However, after Fela Kuti passed away, he found that there was nothing left for him due to his father’s philanthropic ways.

He mentioned that Fela was supporting around 1,000 people in his Kalakuta commune before he passed away.

In a video message posted on his Instagram account, Seun Kuti discussed this experience.

“When Fela was the top musician in Nigeria, we were living with about 500 people in our house. All the money I was meant to inherit, Fela used it to cater for people.

“Everyone in Kalakuta was receiving daily allowance and weekly salaries. Both Kalakuta and [African] shrine. Almost 1000 people. They were artisans… We had all the professions in Kalakuta.

“My pocket money in 1990, throughout my primary school was N100 per day. My pocket money a day was bigger than my teacher’s salary.”
