ASUU Drags FG Universities' Funding

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has listed nine key sins by the federal government.

ASUU’s National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke told Newsmen on Tuesday at the University of Abuja.

Osodeke stated that the Union has also given the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum, warning of potential industrial action if pressing issues in public universities are not addressed.

According to him, ASUU is disappointed in the government’s lack of effort to address the challenges, despite the Union’s patience.

He disclosed that the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU met at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12, 2024 to identify the nine key issues.

They included:
1. Renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, which the previous administration failed to approve.
2. The dissolution of university governing councils, which ASUU considers an illegal act.
3. Issues with the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) payment platform.
4. The imposition of a new curriculum for universities, which ASUU rejects.
5. The proliferation of universities by federal and state governments, which ASUU sees as a threat to adequate funding.
6. The diversion of TETFund intervention funds to a student loan scheme.
7. Unjust sackings of ASUU members in some universities, which the union condemns as fascist.
8. Arrears of earned allowances and non-release of owed salaries.
9. The socio-economic crisis in Nigeria, which ASUU urges the government to address.
