NLC, TUC Gives Govs Ultimatum on N35k Minimum Wage

The National Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has reiterated its May 31, 2024 deadline for the Federal Government to meet its demands on the implementation of a new national minimum wage and the reversal of the electricity tariff hike.

NLC and TUC’s stance follows an emergency meeting of the NLC and TUC National Executive Councils on Monday to address pressing national issues affecting Nigerian workers.

The Labour Leaders discussed the persistent non-compliance with the 2019 National Minimum Wage Act by some state governments and directed their members in Anambra State to prepare for industrial action if the state government fails to meet workers’ demands by May 23, 2024.

Last week, labour unions walked out of minimum wage negotiations with the government after the Federal Government proposed a N48,000 minimum wage, which the unions deemed “ridiculous.”

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero had stated that the government was not serious about negotiating a new minimum wage, while the TUC President, Festus Osifo had described the proposal as “abysmal”, given that federal workers already earn at least N77,000.

On April 14, the Organised Labour demanded a new minimum wage of N615,000 to help workers cope with economic realities and the high cost of living in Nigeria.

The current minimum wage of N30,000, which expired in April 2024, the Unions argued, is no longer for the average Nigerian worker, adding that not all governors are paying the current wage award.
