Burkina Faso’s military leader, Ibrahim Traore, will maintain his position for an additional five years, according to an agreement reached during a national dialogue.
The extension of military rule was announced by Colonel Moussa Diallo, the national dialogue chairman, on state television.
Recall that a two-day national dialogue began in Burkina Faso on Saturday as the West African nation beset by jihadist violence tries to chart a path back to civilian rule.
Meanwhile, Diallo said:

“The duration of the transition is fixed at 60 months from 2 July 2024.”
36-year-old Traore signed the agreement, paving the way for him to run in elections in five years.

Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, seized power in January 2022.
Traore took over as president in a coup that ousted Damiba in September 2022.
With this extension, Traore will serve as military ruler for a total of seven years, after which he may contest elections to remain in office if he wins.
