Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has urged the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to address the insecurity in the southeast region.

Atiku made the call while condemning the killing of five soldiers at that Obikabia junction in Aba, Abia State, during a sit-at-home exercise on May 30.

He also spoke about the impact of the sit-at-home order on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exams in the region.

Atiku said:

“May their souls rest in peace. But even more profound is the impact of yesterday’s sit-at-home in the Southeast region of our country on students writing WAEC examinations.”

Kanu has been in DSS custody since June 2021, facing terrorism charges.

Despite court orders for his release, including an Appeal Court ruling in October 2022, he has remained in detention due to the federal government’s appeal at the Supreme Court.

On December 15, 2023, the Supreme Court allowed the government to proceed with trying Kanu on seven counts.
