President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to prepare a proposal for a new minimum wage template on Wednesday, June 5.

The directive came after a federal government delegation met with the President to discuss the minimum wage negotiations.

According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the President has asked Edun to provide a detailed breakdown of the proposed wage by Wednesday to enable the government to engage in meaningful negotiations with Labor Unions.

Idris explained that the government is not opposed to a wage increase and is committed to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.

The federal government delegation comprises various ministers and officials, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; Labour Minister Nkiruka Onyejeocha; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Earlier, the Organised Labour suspended its nationwide strike, which began on Monday, following assurances from the President to consider a minimum wage above N60,000.

The tripartite committee is scheduled to meet daily for the next week to negotiate a mutually acceptable national minimum wage.

The current minimum wage of N30,000, established in 2019, has been deemed inadequate by labour unions, citing the country’s current economic realities.

Labour Unions have demanded a new minimum wage of N494,000, rejecting previous government offers, including the latest proposal of N60,000.
